A hearty welcome to new coaches this year, but not entirely new to SCG.

Missy Sells has accepted the full time coaching position vacated by Kevin this month.. Missy is a former gymnast who trained as a Jr. Elite Development National Team Member. She went on to become 3-0 State Champion and was a Regional level competitor. Missy is very happy to be back home with SCG and we are pleased to have her join our team. Missy will administrate the Day Care Programs, the new Teacher Workday Camps, and Birthday Parties. She will take on the position of Kips Head Coach.

Allison Hatley, another gymnast with SCG and cheerleader judge, joins us in the capacity of assistant to Tammy Hogan with the Cheerstanly Pee Wees. Allison also teaches gymnastics and will sub when needed. Allison is a first grade teacher at Park Ridge Christian School.

Carla Moore is also no stranger. Having been a former class and High School gymnast at SCG, she has spent the last few year coaching Cheerleading with the Albemarle Youth League. She comes with a wealth of experience and energy. Carla will serve as Head Coach of the Cheerstanly Allstars Sr. Team along with Mimi. She is also teaching Lil Stars Preschool. Carla is a mother of 3.

Winston Salem was the setting for the 2002 North Carolina Gymnastics Coaches Conference. The SCG gymnastics staff attending were Missy Sells, Jill Teeter, and Alex Kennedy, along with Dianne Austin. The coaches attended sessions on the new rule changes to the Jr. Olympic Program, the newest ideas in team and class training on the bars, beam, floor, and the new vault table. Sessions were also helpful on Tumble Trak training and conditioning. Dianne presented a session on “Games and Gymnastics.” The Staff at SCG was complimented for it’s professional look with staff shirts and a neat appearance in a session of Training a Professional Staff.

Mark your calendars for Sept. 21 & 22. Come out to join both the gymnasts and cheerleaders at the festival.

SCG's WELLNESS Corner......by Dianne Austin

Being a front line Baby Boomer, it takes a lot of TLC and people to keep me up and running at the pace at which I choose to operate. What exactly is a Baby Boomer? According to business statistics, anyone born between 1946 and 1965. So chances are that you are one, too. By the way, what’s the big deal? Well there are 60 million of us, and we are literally driving the economy in the Sickness Business and the Health and Wellness Business. Also we want a superior quality of life and we are willing to pay for it! The Baby Boomer will either pay for sickness or wellness to the tune of a trillion dollars over the next 10 years. Because I am interested in living to 105, (I am preparing the kids, now) I wish good health to anyone who wants it. So in the coming months we can all visit the Wellness Corner for articles that may lead us to further inquiry or even ACTION to give our families and ourselves a better quality and quantity of life. In thinking of Wellness, it occurred to me that many health and fitness professionals are parents and grandparents of gymnasts and cheerleaders right here at SCG. We can learn from our own. I wish to thank all of you who have responded so positively to the call to share your expert opinion and health tips. It’s meet time and the Parents Association is busy planning the Spook Fest Invitational Compulsory Meet scheduled on Saturday, November 2. We would like to invite everyone to come to support our compulsory level gymnasts. This is our first Home Compulsory meet in many years. We also host the Mardi Gras Invitational. This years date is February 16, 2003. Join us then for a “Cajun Good Time.”

Boys program has doubled, no, tripled in size. We now have 6 Boys 1 class students and 9 Advanced Pre-team Boys who are coming twice/week. The progress has been significant. The boys program will continue to grow, and a Boys Team is eminent.

Help me welcome Cooper James Hogan, 6 lb. 9 oz. Son of Tammy and Michael Hogan. He is cute as he can be, and oh so tiny. Congratulations! Tammy will resume coaching the Cheerstanly Pee Wees on Sept 23. Welcome back!

Dianne is looking for...

A parent, preferably male, who wants to assist her with the boys program. An interest in athletics and a willing-to-learn attitude, a must; no gymnastics experience necessary.
